Where it wins
Cost per year is unbeaten, and colour and profile options cover almost any home. When a branch or a hailstone gets one section, that section is replaceable without touching the rest — something tile and metal can't always say.
Where it strains
Arizona sun is brutal on asphalt. On unshaded west and south faces the granules go first; ventilation and underlayment quality decide whether the roof reaches its rated life or falls a decade short.
Hail country upgrade
Class 4 impact-rated shingles cost more up front, and many carriers discount your premium for them. If hail is why you're replacing, the upgrade often pays back its difference.
How we install it
Full tear-off, deck check, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water at valleys and penetrations, new flashing everywhere. The shingle is the visible tenth of the system.
The honest bit
Shingle is the value play, not the forever play. If you'll be in the house past 2050, price metal beside it before you decide — we install both, so we have no horse in that race.
Architectural shingle
Every course offset from the one below — courses laid flush leave a joint running ridge to eave. The visible tenth of the system.
Starter course
One sealed row at the eave and a strip up each rake — not a second field. It gives the first visible course something to seal down onto, at the edge where wind always starts.
Synthetic underlayment
Ventilation and underlayment decide whether the roof reaches its rated life.
Deck & eave drip
Drip edge goes on first at the eave, UNDER the underlayment. At the rake it goes over. Backwards is a common re-roof defect.
Everything that decides how long a shingle roof lasts is underneath the part you can see from the street.
What it

Architectural shingle roofing built for Arizona homes
Architectural shingles combine dependable protection with a dimensional, high-end appearance that can dramatically improve your home’s curb appeal. Their laminated construction creates greater depth and character than traditional three-tab shingles, offering the look of natural wood shakes without the same cost or maintenance requirements.
At Astera Roofing, we install complete architectural shingle roofing systems engineered for Arizona’s intense sunlight, seasonal monsoons, high winds, and sudden temperature changes. We help you select the right shingle colour, performance level, ventilation, underlayment, and protective components for your home — not simply the shingles placed on top.
Benefits of architectural shingles
- Dimensional appearance with rich colour and texture
- Stronger, heavier construction than standard three-tab shingles
- Excellent value for roof replacements and new construction
- Wide selection of colours and styles
- Wind- and impact-resistant options available
- Reflective shingle options that may help reduce rooftop heat
- Manufacturer warranties available depending on the selected system
A better roof starts with the right system
Even the best shingles depend on proper installation. Astera Roofing carefully evaluates the roof deck, flashing, underlayment, ventilation, valleys, penetrations, and ridge components to create a complete roofing system designed for lasting performance.

Asked often
How long does a shingle roof really last here?
The rated 25–30 years assumes decent ventilation and installation. In full Arizona sun with a hot attic, subtract five to ten. That's why we talk about airflow on every quote.
Repair or replace?
If the field is sound and damage is local, repair. We stock-match colour, and we'll tell you honestly when a roof has enough life left that replacement would be wasting your money.
